Dr. Joseph Fearon, D.D.S., F.A.G.D. practices general dentistry in New York City and has extensive training in oral facial pain. He graduated from SUNY—Stony Brook, School of Dental Medicine in 1986. From 1986-87, Dr. Fearon was a General Practice Dental Resident at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan.
My practice sees an abnormally high number of TMD patients for general dental procedures, and up until the discovery of The JawDropper, I routinely placed a pediatric bite block between my patient’s molars for resting.
In doing so, I’ve found it is vital that the bite block does not wedge the jaw open but rather be small enough for the patient to passively close down. This enables the lateral pterygoids to rest whereas a larger bite block has the opposite effect of stressing the pterygoids and possibly sending them into myospasm or creating trigger points in the muscle.
The limitation of the pediatric bite block technique has always been that the patient can’t swallow without removing the block, which can result in the patient feeling a bit out of control. This usually leads to frequent treatment stoppages or an entire reset where we take out the bite block, sit the patient up, have them rinse and spit, and then begin again.
With The JawDropper, the stoppages are averted. The patient feels better in control and they can quickly swallow and spit without disrupting the rhythm of the dental procedure. In addition the patient loves being able to calibrate the downward pressure to assist the lateral pterygoids and anterior digastrics in opening, essentially preventing the jaw discomfort pain themselves. It is a win/win.
Thanks so much for this device; it seems to give my patients one less reason to dread their dental visits.
